The Pipestone County Historical Society announces the opening of the 1918 Time Capsule at Central School on Saturday, November 10 at 11 am. The time-capsule was originally placed in the cornerstone at the construction of Central School in 1918. An informal ceremony was held at that time, deliberately low key due to the United States’ involvement in World War One. According to an August 1918 issue of the Pipestone County Star, which reported on the event, a box containing several interesting items was put in the cornerstone and the stone was then set in place. The stone itself is a large piece of white Bedford limestone, bearing the inscription “A.D. 1918.” The cornerstone has not been at the “corner” of the building since the north wing addition in 1939, but it is still visible to the north of the main entrance.

Anyone wishing to take part in this event will meet at Central School for a short outdoor ceremony honoring the building at the removal of the time capsule from the cornerstone. The program will be as follows:

11:00 am: Official welcome
11:05 am: Brief History of Central School
11:15 am: A school song singalong
11:20 am: Opening of the 1918 Time Capsule
11:30 am: Closing remarks and the conclusion of the formal program

After the time capsule opening, the contents can be seen on display at the Pipestone County Museum. Opportunity for sharing Central School memories can be written at the opening ceremony or by clicking on the pdf below. Bring your form with you or email it to pipctymu@iw.net
